Night is a music ensemble based in Kathmandu. Since its foundation in 2006, it has intensively researched the roots of Nepalese music, reviving lost and endangered Nepalese instruments to create new sounds. In doing so, the musicians respect the country's ancient and rich musical traditions and cultural diversity. Over the past decade, the ensemble has become a mainstay of Nepalese folk music as well as traditional and spiritual music. Nepal has over one hundred different ethnic groups and languages and diverse landscapes. These are the sources of inspiration for the songs in various languages and dialects, the settings of epics and for his own pieces relating to life in Nepal today.

Nepal – an undiscovered cosmos
Nepal's landscape stretches from tropical plains to the icy peaks of the Himalayas. Its music possesses a similarly exciting diversity. The NIGHT ensemble brings these hidden treasures to light, amid rural folklore, Indian influences, and spiritual coloring.

The quintet was formed in 2006 in the capital Kathmandu around singer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Kunwar. After an initial phase as a metal band, the musicians decided to explore and preserve the cultural cosmos of the country's more than 100 ethnic groups and languages. Accompanied by intensive field research trips to remote villages, they have developed a repertoire that rediscovers old songs and nearly lost instruments. These include the paluwa flute, made from fresh reeds, the three-stringed, sheepskin-strung bowed instrument sarangi, and the tungna string instrument from the Tamang ethnic group.

Drawing on their deep understanding of traditional music, the ensemble also composes new songs. This "new school folk" speaks of spirituality as well as the arduous life in the countryside. The ensemble also documents its work on film – thus opening up an opportunity for Nepal to share its fascinating heritage with future generations and the world.

Lakurim Chhaya is based on a goatherd song from the eastern hills of Nepal. Shiva Kumar Khatri learned this melody from his elders during his young goat-herding days in Bhojpur. This is the rarest goatherd tune and must be one of its kind, as we could not find anyone aware of it during our research in the eastern hills of Nepal. The song is recorded live at Ghopte Bheer, Ahale, Sunsari.

Hinter der Musik der Nepalesen steht auch ein musiktheoretischer Ansatz, der sich gezielt mit ethnologischen und kulturellen auseinandersetzt. Zwischen Festivals in Großbritannien, Polen und Schweden finden Night aufs Neuköllner Dach und bringen den tausendsassa-esken Knox Chandler mit. Wow!

Night ist eine in Kathmandu ansässige Folk-Band, die 2006 gegründet wurde. Die Musiker haben verschiedene musikalische Hintergründe. Ziel der Gruppe Night ist es, traditionelle Instrumente aus Nepal, die in Vergessenheit zu geraten gefährdet waren, durch die Schaffung neue Klänge aus der reiche Erbschaft nepalesische Musik, wieder zu beleben und ein breiteres Publikum weltweit zugänglich zu machen.
